The Farinetti family is making its official move into the No/Lo (No and Low Alcohol) sector with the Vi Nicola project. The venture kicks off with the launch of Cinque Gradi 2025, a 100% Moscato that is naturally low in alcohol, produced without any dealcoholization or dilution processes.
Announced by Oscar Farinetti, this marks the first release in a series focused on organic, naturally low-ABV wines—a direct response to the decline in global wine consumption. In recent interviews, Farinetti highlighted that between 2019 and 2025, global wine consumption plummeted by 20% (an equivalent of 50 million hectoliters). He attributes this shift to rising prices, health consciousness, and a perception among younger generations that wine is a “product for the elderly.”
According to the Eataly founder, the industry must be revitalized with accessible, high-quality wines that cater to younger palates, offering a genuine alternative to the world of mixology.
Cinque Gradi: Production and Tasting Notes
Cinque Gradi is produced in the Alta Langa region at an altitude of 600 meters. The grapes are harvested during the first ten days of August—a full month ahead of schedule—resulting in lower sugar content and a distinct minerality derived from the limestone soil. Its unique character is shaped through three integrated vinification methods: whole-cluster fermentation in wooden vats, hyper-oxidation of the must, and an infusion of approximately 20% whole berries.
- Appearance: A pale straw yellow.
- Aroma: Floral notes accompanied by bright citrus hints.
- Palate: Defined by remarkable freshness and a superb sweet-acid balance, finishing with lingering notes of citrus, particularly tangerine.
Pairing Suggestions: This wine pairs effortlessly with burrata, citrus-infused fish carpaccio, sushi, sashimi, shrimp tempura, or a delicate Pad Thai. It is equally at home with desserts like tangerine tart, lemon cake, or fresh fruit salad.
- Technical Specs: Residual sugar: 40g/l | Calories: 46 kcal per 100ml (standard restaurant pours are typically 125ml).
The Vi Nicola Project
As shared via their Instagram channels, the Vi Nicola low-alcohol project is a collaborative effort between Oscar Farinetti’s three sons, each contributing a specific expertise:
- Nicola (President of Eataly): Provided the vision regarding international demand for light, fresh wines.
- Andrea (Head of the group’s agricultural estates and wineries): Brought technical rigor and the deep-rooted traditions of the Langa region.
- Francesco: Acted as the bridge to find the perfect equilibrium for the brand.
The inaugural production of Cinque Gradi is limited to 3,000 bottles.
